Digital human models are increasingly used to support research and design in fields such as automotive engineering, aerospace, fashion, and medicine.

Why DHM is Transformative

“DHM essentially leverages computational tools to create simulations of the human body from the inside out,” explains Professor Sofia Scataglini, a biomedical engineer and leading authority in human digital modeling.
These digital representations can be integrated with other computerized systems to study and optimize designs, workplaces, or products in their interactions with humans, says Scataglini.
The potential uses of DHM are extensive. “In health sciences and medicine, for instance, we utilize 4D scanning to capture not just static body shapes, but dynamic movements over time—known as 4D anthropometry. This allows us to measure motor tasks such as gait or posture non-invasively.”
Moreover, DHM can be applied in virtual environments for personalized gamification or to simulate musculoskeletal behaviors in research. When combined with AI, these models can support predictive simulations, assisting in areas such as clinical decision-making. Other applications include integration with medical devices, chatbots, and more.

Human-Centered Design

Since digital human models often inform products or services that humans will use, human-centered design and DHM are closely connected. Accurate simulations allow designers to understand how different body types and abilities interact with products, helping identify potential challenges.
Experts like Scataglini emphasize human-centered design, which focuses on the user and their needs. This approach ensures products are accessible and tailored to a diverse population.
For example, elderly users may find certain technologies difficult to navigate. By using DHM, designers can gain insight into their specific requirements. Additionally, interfaces using digital human models could incorporate friendly, familiar voices—such as a virtual relative or healthcare professional—to make technology more approachable and comfortable for seniors.

The Need for Standardization

As DHM and human-centered design expand into different industries, establishing standards is critical for interoperability and consistent application.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) plays a key role in standardization. Through the joint IEC and ISO technical committee on IoT (SC 41), safety, reliability, and compatibility standards are set for diverse applications.
Professor Scataglini herself is deeply involved in standardization efforts at national (NBN), European (CENELEC), and international (ISO and IEC) levels. She also promotes global collaboration by organizing the annual International Congress on Digital Human Modeling and has authored multiple influential publications, including a recent book on human-centered design for enhanced healthcare.
Her contributions to DHM and dedication to advancing scientific and technological research recently earned her recognition with an award for excellence in the field.
