For parents who are new to field hockey, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the various positions on the field to assist your player in choosing the one that best suits them. Field hockey is a fast-paced sport, and with eleven players on the field, it can be difficult to figure out which role is most appropriate for your child. Forwards:
Forwards play between the midfield and the opponent’s goalkeeper. They are generally the players responsible for scoring the most goals during a match. Forwards are sometimes referred to as strikers. Their main job is to work together as a unit to move the ball down the field and create scoring opportunities. Great forwards are team-oriented, fast, and adept at creating space and ball movement to set up their teammates for success.
Midfielders:
Midfielders, also called halfbacks, must be versatile, as they need to excel in both defense and offense. Midfielders require excellent stamina because they are constantly moving up and down the field. They need to be quick to defend when the attacking team pushes forward, while staying alert to the ball’s location. Midfielders bridge the gap between defense and offense, supporting both ends of the game.
Fullbacks:
Fullbacks are primarily focused on defense. Their main responsibility is to guard against opposing forwards and prevent the ball from getting to the goalkeeper. A successful defensive play allows the ball to be transitioned back to the forwards and midfielders, who can then try to score. A fullback needs to always be aware of their opposing player and assist midfielders when transitioning into attack.
Sweeper:
At times, coaches will have a single fullback stay closer to the goal. This player is known as the sweeper and acts as an additional line of defense. They remain behind the other fullbacks, near the goalie, providing extra protection. Their job mirrors that of a fullback—defending against opposing forwards and keeping the ball out of the goal area.
Goalie:
Goalkeepers are often considered the most crucial position on the field since they are the final defense before the opposing team can score. A goalie must have sharp reflexes and be able to block hard shots using their body and stick. In addition to stopping shots, goalkeepers must communicate with their teammates to coordinate defensive strategies. Goalies need to work closely with fullbacks to ensure the goal is protected at all times.
